Cut-Outs is a series of images that I originally made for exhibition Think and Wonder, Wonder and think at the Museum of Childhood, London. For this exhibition a group of artists were invited to produce work in response to the museums permanent collection
I chose to work with the paperdolls cabinet as at the time i had been working a mostly with women's glossy magazines. By using a scalpel without a previous drawing, I removed it part of the image making the women look "emptily" pregnant . Their gestures, body language and facial expression, originally advertising clothes or products, now seem to refer directly to their pregnant condition.
With this piece I wanted to draw reference to women and child hood. Does a woman become an adult when she becomes a mother? even a teenager? Does she stop being young and beautiful after having children? Is having children a choice or a necessity?
