Between Animals and Trees

Between Animals and Trees, 2021-2024, collage on card, 21 × 30 cm (size of card)

Images of women performing classical yoga poses are juxtaposed with illustrations appropriated from a vintage insect encyclopaedia. “Nature” takes the place of facial and bodily features, allowing new relationships to form between the figures and their bodies.

Evoking the aesthetics of animal horror B-cinema, this series was initially conceived during the pandemic, responding to feelings of threat, infestation, and fear in relation to the crisis. The work explores the relationship between the human body and the natural world—a relationship that felt questioned, distorted, and contested during the pandemic.
